Tips on Activities
While diving is the main attraction on Bonaire for many visitors, the island has a lot more to offer. Take a look at everything that you can do on the island, so that you make the most out of your trip.

Scuba diving
Diving on Bonaire is world-renowned for its clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life. The island offers both shore and boat dives, with more than 80 dive sites to explore, many of which are easily accessible from the shore. Most resorts offer guided diving tours, either from diving instructors working for the resorts, or from instructors that they have partnered with. If you want to stay at a resort perfectly geared towards diving, try Buddy Dive. If your resort or accommodation does not offer diving, contact a diving instructor, like Dive Friends Bonaire, with English-speaking instructors.
Snorkelling
If you’re not too keen on diving, or just don’t want to go through all the hassle of putting on all the diving gear, snorkelling is a great alternative to still see a lot of the underwater world of Bonaire. Great snorkelling spots are:
- Wayaka: Known for its calm waters and vibrant coral gardens, Wayaka is one of the best snorkeling spots on Bonaire. The site offers a shallow reef, making it perfect for beginners. You’ll find an array of colorful fish, sea fans, and even the occasional turtle. Wayaka is located inside of Washington Slagbaai National Park.
- 1000 Steps: Despite the name, there are only about 60 steps to reach this popular snorkeling spot. The waters here are calm and filled with healthy coral reefs, ideal for seeing large schools of fish, rays, and starfish.
- Bari Reef: This site is part of Bonaire’s marine park and is famous for its impressive biodiversity. The shallow reef is perfect for snorkeling, with plenty of opportunities to spot parrotfish, angelfish, and sea turtles.
- Te Amo Beach: Located close to the airport, Te Amo Beach is another great spot for snorkeling. The water is shallow, and you can swim out to the reef where you’ll find a variety of tropical fish and beautiful corals.
- Salt Pier: While primarily a dive site, Salt Pier is also great for snorkeling. The area around the pier is home to a rich marine environment, and you may encounter schools of fish, rays, and even the occasional seahorse.
Kayaking
Kayaking is another great way to enjoy the waters around Bonaire. The guided kayak tour through the mangroves on Bonaire offers a unique way to explore the island’s natural beauty. Paddling through calm, shallow waters, you’ll navigate the maze of mangrove roots while learning about the ecosystem from a knowledgeable guide. The mangroves are home to various species of birds, fish, and other wildlife, making it a peaceful and educational experience. The tour provides a chance to see Bonaire’s coastal environment up close, with plenty of opportunities to observe the rich biodiversity. It’s a great activity for nature lovers and those looking to enjoy the island’s serene waters.
You can opt to take a one-hour ($30 per adult) or two-hour ($50 per adult) tour. Be sure to bring sunscreen and anti-mosquito products.
Blowkarting
The wind on Bonaire typically blows from the east, providing a refreshing breeze throughout the year. This consistent, relatively strong wind, also allows for blowkarting, or land sailing as it’s called on Bonaire. A fun activity, suitable for both children and adults. Note that children aged 8 and older can ride their own kart, while younger children can ride in a twoseater with an adult. Both Dutch- and English-speaking instructors are available. Sunglasses are recommended to protect your eyes from blowing sand and are available if needed, though it’s most comfortable to bring your own pair. A session takes about 60 minutes, and costs $60 per person. Although this may seem long, the time surely flies by when sailing around the track. Book your session with Bonaire land sailing adventures.
Visiting the Cadushy Distillery
Visiting the Cadushy Distillery on Bonaire is a fun and unique experience for those interested in local spirits. The distillery is known for producing the island’s signature Cadushy liquor, made from the indigenous cactus plant. During the tour, you’ll learn about the production process and the history behind this distinctive drink. Tastings are offered, allowing you to sample different varieties of Cadushy and other local liqueurs. Cadushy Distillery is located in Rincon, the oldest and most characteristic village on the island. You’ll find little accommodations there, and mostly locals live in the village. Visiting the distillery provides a good opportunity to also experience this authentic village. Road signs are posted throughout the village to direct you to the distillery. The Cadushy products are available in other shops around the island (including the supermarkets), but are cheapest at the distillery.
Visiting Washington Slagbaai Park
Washington Slagbaai National Park is one of Bonaire’s top attractions, offering stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and great opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring nature. The park is home to beaches, salt flats, and rugged cliffs, with well-marked trails that lead you to some of the most scenic spots on the island. The park is open every day from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but it’s a good idea to arrive early to make the most of the daylight and enjoy the park before it gets too hot. Entry to the park is allowed until 2:30 PM. Be sure to bring plenty of water, sturdy shoes for hiking, and sunscreen. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for navigating some of the rougher roads within the park. Whether you want to explore the wildlife or simply relax by a secluded beach, Washington Slagbaai offers something for every nature lover.
Visiting the Donkey Sanctuary
The Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary is a heartwarming and unique place to visit, dedicated to rescuing and caring for the island’s wild donkeys. Located in the northern part of the island, the sanctuary provides a safe haven for over 700 donkeys that have been rescued or are being cared for after being abandoned. The sanctuary offers guided tours, where you can learn about their rescue efforts and the importance of donkey conservation on Bonaire. The entrance fee helps support the sanctuary’s work, and donations are always welcome. You can buy some donkey food at the front gate, but you are also welcome to bring some food for them yourself. Pick up some carrots from the local supermarket, for example. Open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, it’s a great way to spend time outdoors while supporting a good cause.
